Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Radha Mohan Singh on Saturday said that the Central Government is aiming at doubling the income of fishermen and fish farmers by 2022 by implementing the ‘Blue Revolution'.
He was speaking at the four-day Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival, 2017, currently on at Campal Ground, Panaji.
"Blue Revolution is focusing on fostering use of new and modern technology, training and capacity building of fishermen and fish farmers, adoption of scientific advises and methods, diversification of species and fish health management, among others. The Government aims at doubling the income of fishermen and fish farmers by 2022 through the implementation of Blue Revolution," he said.
Stating that India ranks second in fish production in the world, he informed that the overall fish production has increased from 0.75 million tonnes in 1950-51 to 11.41 million tonnes in 2016-17.
"This sector also provides employment and livelihood support to more than 15 million people in the country. This is the fastest growing sector in India, which is making significant contribution of about 6.2 per cent to fish production of the world," he said.
He also informed that overall fish production has increased to an extent of 19 per cent in the last three years.
"Growth rate in marine fisheries was about 6.65 per cent while growth rate of 26.07 per cent has been achieved in inland fisheries. India has earned more than 5.78 billion dollars foreign exchange (Rs.37, 871 crore) in 2016-17 through fish exports and fish products," he said.
"Foreseeing vast resources, Government has merged all the schemes of fisheries sector into an umbrella scheme of ‘Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries' and provided a financial outlay of Rs 3,000 crore," he informed.
He also informed that mariculture has been taken up under Blue Revolution to enhance production from marine sector and said that coastal states have been provided with financial and technical support including training and capacity building.
"The financial assistance for housing of fishermen has been increased from Rs 0.75 lakh to Rs 1.20 lakh in general states and Rs 1.30 lakh for north-eastern and hilly states under the Welfare Scheme for Fishermen. Fishermen Housing Scheme has been merged with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Scheme," he stated.
