Two books by noted writer and Zonkar of Aldona Comunidade Alphie Monteiro, one in Konkani and the other in English, were released at a gathering in Pune.
The books, which share the same title, explore different themes and subjects, with a focus on Goan settlers in the Upper Ghats region. Besides Konkani and English, the books also contain a section in Marathi.
The launch was held at Shivajinagar, Pune, in the presence of several noted personalities. The programme began with prayers by Ajit Brahmane, followed by a welcome address by Philomena Monteiro.
Explaining the significance of Bardeskari, Monteiro said the books bring together his writings and observations on people, society, history and culture.
Published by Chetak Books, Pune, the books mark an important milestone in Monteiro’s literary journey and his efforts to document people, history, culture and Bardeskar heritage.
A key feature of the books is Monteiro’s portrayal of people from different walks of life, particularly Goan settlers in and around the Upper Ghats. Alongside prominent personalities, he has also written about ordinary and often overlooked people, including Tukoba Chambhar, Sushila Bai Hiwale, a sweeper, and Akbar Khan, a scrap collector.
The books also recall forgotten Bardeskar heroes and explore historical and lesser-known subjects.
The Konkani edition was released by Krushnaji Nadgir, while the Marathi edition was released by Usha Kamat.
Pune-based activist Peter D’Souza praised Monteiro’s contribution to society and the Bardeskar community, describing him as a role model.
Ulka Nadgir appreciated his engaging writing and his continuing thirst for knowledge, including his efforts to learn Kannada, chess and the Modi script.
Juliet Mendonca, Dattu Masekar, Prakash Kamat, Anthony Monteiro and others also praised Monteiro’s literary work.
