Borim villagers heave a sigh of relief after male leopard trapped in cage
PONDA
A male leopard was trapped in a cage laid by the forest department at Sukanne-Tishem, Borim, in Shiroda constituency, in the wee hours of Friday.
The wild cat was spotted by many locals since the last one month and a cage was set up in the area.
The forest officials informed that the cage was set up 15 days back and the leopard got trapped in the wee hours of Friday. "There was panic in the area, as leopard was spotted in the area. Many had spotted the wild cat at night and also during the day. Hence, we h
ad to set up the cage," an officer said on condition of anonymity.
It may be recalled that in January 2014, a leopard was found dead in this area, which had proved the existence of wild cats in the area. The carcass was spotted at the sluice gates of a pond, which provides water to areca nut plantation in the area.
According to the villagers, they had spotted leopards in the area and other wild animals near the pond and in other areas many times. Though there are few houses on this hillock, the animals are seen moving in the area.
"They are mostly spotted during cashew plantations season. We get afraid to work in the plantations. Now, we have got a bit of relief after leopard is trapped. But there may be more leopards in this area," a villager said.
The villagers said they had stopped coming out of the houses at night as leopard was moving in the area.
