The joint meeting convened between Bodgeshwar temple committee, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) resolved to ban use of plastic during the Bodgeshwar Zatra and provide the devotees with reusable plates to make offerings instead of plastic bags.
In the meeting, it was also decided to provide dustbins to shopkeepers and sweet-mart operators and to restrict stalls from using plastic bags during the fair. The temple committee has been directed to inform the stall operators about plastic ban while allotting them spaces for fair.
It was resolved to make the Bodgeshwar Zatra a plastic-free fair. MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the council will provide dustbins to all the stalls in the fair and market inspectors will patrol the area to ensure no plastic is used and special booths will be set up for this purpose.
"We will create awareness on plastic-free Bodgeshwar Zatra by asking social organizations, self-help groups and NCC students to distribute flyers to celebrate plastic-free Zatra," said Kavlekar.
MMC Councillors Sudhir Kandolkar and Tushar Tople, GSWMC managing director Sanjit Rodrigues, project manager Richard Dias and officer Prerna Pawaskar, temple committee president Anand Bhaidkar and others were present for the meeting.
