Sulakshana Sawant, the wife of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and president of the Goa State Women Self-Help Groups Association said that women have to prioritise themselves for the sake of the family.
Sawant was speaking to reporters at Goa airport as a chief guest for a breast cancer awareness programme organised by India Turns Pink (ITP) in association with Airport Authority of India (AAI) Kalyanmayee in the presence of Goa Airport Director Gagan Malik, Goa Airport Kalyanmayee president Minakshi Malik, Women and Child Development (WCD) Director Deepali Naik, Founder President of ITP P A Anandkumar and others.
Sawant further said creating awareness of breast cancer was very important because breast cancer was the world’s second most detected cancer.
“We as a team must look at the issue and find a solution as a society and awareness is one of the basic solutions. Though I felt that the programme should be held in rural areas, I am now convinced that the programme at the airport also will benefit many women,” said Sawant.
Founder president of ITP P A Anandkumar said that awareness was most important and activities were being carried out in schools and college level as well.
The president of Kalyanmayee Goa Airport Minakshi Malik said that she was a survivor of breast cancer and it was vital that women go for self-checks to detect early symptoms. “ITP along with Kalyanmayee Goa are trying to achieve the goal to make India Breast cancer-free nation by 2030. We should go for self-examination and regular check-ups because I had no symptoms nor pain while I was detected of breast cancer and since it was detected early I survived,” said Malik.
WCD director Deepali Naik said that many programmes were undertaken in villages for breast cancer.
Airport Director Gagan Malik said that women were the strongest pillar of the society and the most important member of the family and hence needed to take utmost care of themselves.
