Speaking to The Goan, Kavlekar stated, “The budget aims to save not the people from financial hardships but the coalition government from falling apart right in the beginning. By presenting nothing but political rhetoric through the budget speech, the BJP has conceded that it has failed to deliver in its last five-year tenure.”
He labelled the strategy of the BJP as a ‘carrot and stick’ approach, and charged that in the hope of keeping the coalition government together, several constituencies represented by the BJP and its allies have been placed in the limelight through the announcement of projects and packages for them. “It is supposed to be the annual reality check of the functioning of the government. Hike of 15 per cent in VAT on motor spirits and in excise duties across the spectrum at the start of a new tenure is a clear indication that the state treasuries have been emptied out by the BJP in its previous tenure,” he declared.
