Five labourers were injured in Mapusa when a concrete slab of an under construction building collapsed on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 12.30 on Sunday afternoon in the area near the old building of the Mapusa Municipal Council at Angod when the work of casting the slab was in progress, an eyewitness account said.

Mapusa police who reached the site had not booked any offence until late Sunday evening. Fortunately, there were no fatalities but police said five labourers were injured who have been shifted to the North Goa District Hospital for treatment.

Police gave the names of the injured as Sibu Thakur (33), Ranjeet Kumar (30), Gautam Yadav (20) and Dilip Kumar (25) who are all natives of Bihar. The fifth injured labourer is Suhail Rana (22) from Bengal.

According to the police the work of casting the slab of the first floor of the under-construction 'Laura Enclave' building was in progress when the shuttering gave way and it collapsed.

Another eye-witness account said there were at least 15 to 20 labourers working on the site when the slab collapsed and it was a miracle that only five were injured.

The Goa Police and the district administration have launched an inquiry into the accident.
