South Goa district Superintendent of Police Tikam Singh has said that the police department will not hesitate to initiate an inquiry into allegations that banned bullfights are being held with the patronage of police station officials.
He further said that the department has made provisions for the deployment of additional manpower to prevent bullfights.
Commenting on bullfights taking place in Salcete taluka, the district police chief said personnel in uniform have been prompt in preventing such events whenever the department receives timely information. “In cases where bullfights are held in violation of the law, the police ensure that the organisers are arrested and the bulls are seized,” he told the media.
Referring to recent bullfights held in the Margao police sub-division, Tikam Singh said the police had arrested the accused involved in organising the events.
When the media sought the SP’s comments on allegations that bullfights were taking place with the patronage of police station officials, Tikam Singh said the department would definitely initiate an inquiry if any such allegations were made against a police officer.
“We have now made provisions for the deployment of additional manpower to ensure that police personnel are deployed at venues to prevent bullfights,” he said.
When asked why the police did not register an FIR in connection with the illegal bullfight held at Telaulim last month, the SP said information suggested that when police received information about the planned event, a team rushed to the venue and ensured that it did not take place.
