Burglars are believed to have struck gold and cash in a daring daylight burglary in a busy residential housing colony at Colmorod-Margao on Tuesday morning.
The burglars are believed to have fled with a booty, consisting of cash of Rs 2.5 lakh, 2500 Dirham, besides gold ornaments comprising finger rings, gold chain, bracelet and bangles.
The incident is believed to have taken place on Tuesday morning when the owner Abdul Jabbar Mulla had locked the apartment to head to Panaji. He soon received a call from his daughter, who had just returned home from Vasco, that the apartment was found open and ransacked inside.
When the owner returned home, his worst fears came true as he found to his shock that the miscreants had laid their hands on the gold jewellery consisting of eight gold rings, gold chains, bracelet and bangles. Cash of Rs 2.5 lakh, savings of his daughter, was also stolen, besides 2500 Dirham.
Mulla told The Goan that he had left for Panaji after locking the apartment since other occupants of the house had gone out of station, while the daughter had gone to Vasco.
“When I got down the building, I overheard a person inquiring whether there are CCTV cameras around. I have a doubt and suspect that this same person might be involved in the crime,” he said.
Mulla wondered how the burglars could just break in when the residential colony has round-the-clock security. “The security man on duty says he did not come across any persons with suspicious movement in the colony,” Mulla added.
Margao police pressed into service a forensic team to assist in the investigations.
DySP Harish Madkaikar said the police would register an FIR and investigate the matter.
