Former Benaulim MLA, Caitu D’Silva, on Saturday joined the Congress party accusing the ruling BJP-led government of neglecting Goa’s fishing community and doing little to protect it from the onslaught of the new CRZ notification.

Silva, who in the 2012 assembly election emerged a giant-killer defeating current Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao’s daughter, Valanka, was welcomed into the party by GPCC vice-president Agnel Fernandes in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP and national manifesto committee chairperson Rajiv Gowda.

Silva said he would work hard to ensure a massive lead in the Benaulim Assembly segment for the Congress’s South Goa candidate Francisco Sardinha, who he said would certainly emerge victorious.

The entry of the former Benaulim MLA comes as a shot in the arm for the party’s campaign in the South. During his term in 2012-17, Caitu was known to be close to former chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
