A Mapusa court on Tuesday convicted three local youth of Calangute in the Tyron Nazareth murder case that took place near the Calangute fish market in 2017.
The Additional District and Sessions Court sentenced the main accused Joseph Ismail Sequeira and his two associates Ceon Fernandes and Mahesh Rampal to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 each.
The brutal attack took place on the night of June 24, 2017 close to midnight when the victim Tyrone Nazareth was attacked by the three accused with a knife and a sword near the Calangute fish market.
The victim was severely injured in the assault and was immediately shifted to the North Goa District Hospital for treatment. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Initially, a junior investigating officer had registered an attempt to murder case but on the death of the victim murder charges were imposed and the case was handed over to then Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi to investigate.
Subsequently, PI Dalvi filed a chargesheet in the case on September 20, 2017.
The three accused were arrested on June 27, 2017 and have since been in custody for nearly six years.
Incidentally, the deceased was history-sheeter and was released on bail four days before the incident.
The prosecution examined a total of 19 witnesses in the case.
Trials were held before Additional District and Sessions Judge Kshama Joshi who convicted the three accused and proclaimed them to life imprisonment.
The conviction comes after a thorough investigation led by then Calangute PI and present Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi.
