In an effort to curb the menace of public drinking, the Calangute Police have launched a stringent drive against individuals found consuming alcohol in public places.

This initiative follows repeated incidents of tourists discarding alcohol bottles on the beach, which have led to injuries from broken glass and even drowning cases linked to alcohol consumption.

Since January 1, Calangute Police have registered 21 cases against individuals caught drinking in public places and have collected a total of Rs 42,000 in fines. The drive is set to continue in a bid to enhance tourist safety and maintain cleanliness on the beaches.

By implementing this crackdown, authorities aim to foster a safer and more pleasant experience for visitors while preserving the scenic beauty of Goa’s beaches.

Public drinking has become a frequent sight, with tourists often seen carrying beer bottles and glasses in open areas along the coastline.

Despite the State government's ban on consuming liquor in public, tourists frequently flout this law, often facing minimal repercussions.

Authorities have previously taken a lenient stance on such violations, but the increasing number of alcohol-related disturbances has necessitated stricter enforcement.

In the past, intoxicated tourists have been responsible for altercations on beach shacks and public areas, further escalating concerns about safety and public order.

The Calangute Police have assured continued vigilance to prevent such incidents and reinforce adherence to the law.
