Calangute Panchayat and the Traffic Police began a drive against abandoned vehicles on Tuesday and seized about 21 vehicles which were abandoned on the footpaths and by the roadsides.

The action was initiated under the supervision of Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira with the help of Calangute Traffic Police Inspector Sachin Narvekar and his team.

The vehicles were abandoned by the roadsides for months and the Panchayat had issued notices to the vehicle owners directing them to remove the vehicles.

This notice, however, went unheeded and the panchayat decided to take action by seizing 15 two-wheelers and six four-wheelers.

Commenting on the action, Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira told reporters that no abandoned vehicle which spoils the beauty of Goan villages should be left unattended on the road.

“These abandoned vehicles cause hindrance to traffic. One of these vehicles was on the road for the past three years, which was also removed,” he said.

“A notice would be issued to the owners of the seized vehicles and fine would be levied on them. These vehicles will be sold by auction after informing the Traffic Cell and after putting an advertisement,” Sequeira told reporters.
