Dr N Vinodkumar, who has just taken over as chairman of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) on Tuesday said there were plans to achieve maximum business with minimum impact on the environment.
Vinodkumar, who took charge as MPA Chairman on Monday, also informed reporters that maximum stress would be given on green cargo and other cargo alternatives to be handled in the port.
"I am new to this assignment and the basic plan is to understand the business of the port but every port has a lot of strength, opportunities and lot of assets. We need to look at how to monetise assets and attract more cargo, off course without affecting the environment much, and leaving a minimum impact on the environment,” said Dr Vinodkumar.
“We need to see how we can get more economical and get more commercial cargo and lead the port to its past glory. We have to maintain ourselves and help the society, benefit Goans and gain more employment with minimum impact on the environment."
Dr Vinodkumar said he was lucky to have had an opportunity to work as the Postmaster General in Goa between 2017 and 2021.
"I was the Postmaster General for Goa and some parts of Maharashtra. With post offices in every nook and corner in Goa, I have seen almost every part of Goa, more than an average Goan has seen and this will definitely help me since I know the place and the people of Goa.”
“As Postmaster General, I also got an opportunity to meet and interact with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister of State for Ports and Shipping Shripad Naik. This will give me more familiarity to work with the leaders and help me work in the interest of the port and the people," said Dr Vinodkumar.
"My first priority will be the sustainable development of the port and we may have to welcome wherever cargo but we will do it while leaving minimum impact on the environment. We will look at both aspects on how the port can lead a balanced life because we leave an imprint on the environment, every time we do a commercial activity. I will definitely look at that aspect while we balance out activity in the port," he added.
