The campaigning for the by-election in Valpoi constituency has reached its peak with Congress candidate Roy Naik preferring house-to-house campaign, while BJP candidate and Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane stressing on corner meetings.
Naik, a new face for the people of Valpoi, has succeeded in making a strong pitch against BJP's Rane, who has represented Valpoi for over
12 years.
Both the candidates are making all-out efforts to woo voters in Usgao-Ganje Panchayat which could play a crucial role in the election result. This panchayat was part of Ponda constituency before it was merged with Valpoi constituency.
The Congress candidate is accompanied by his father, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, who is a seasoned politician. They have been going house to house accompanied by senior Congress leaders and Valpoi Congress Block members.
Speaking to The Goan, Ravi Naik said Valpoi is a bastion of the Congress for the last three decades.
"It won't be an unfavourable position for the Congress in Valpoi. In fact, Congressmen are happy to work for the Congress party in future with a free hand," said Naik.
"When we visit the houses in Valpoi constituency, the constituents are welcoming us and extending their support to our party. We have already completed the first round of house-to-house visits in the constituency and the second round started two days back," informed the Ponda MLA.
BJP candidate Vishwajeet Rane is busy attending corner meetings at different places in the constituency.
Sources said so far Rane has attended over 500 corner meetings at different places in the constituency. "Though he is the official candidate of the BJP, meetings are organised without the saffron party leaders. At many places, the BJP leaders are keeping a safe distance from Rane during campaigning," said the source.
