CANACONA

A spike in Covid cases on Thursday has taken the active count to over 400 in Canacona taluka but there are concerns that the active cases could be much higher since many have been using home test kits and are under home quarantine.

According to the local health bulletin, 100 cases were reported on Thursday and this is the third time in six days that the new cases touched three figures.

Of these 100 cases, the maximum was reported from Canacona municipality (48), followed by Poinguinim (17), Agonda(15), Shrishthal (12), Loliem-Polem (5), Khotigao (2) and Gaondongrim (1).

At present, the official number of active cases are 419, while the total number of Covid cases in Canacona taluka are 4,555 as on Thursday.

Sources said the actual number of active Covid cases could be much higher in Canacona taluka, as many people are resorting to home test kits and if they test positive, are isolating themselves at home.

“A private diagnostic lab in Canacona has started Covid tests, but these results are reportedly not added to the official figures recorded at the Canacona Community Health Centre, else the official figures may have skyrocketed in the taluka,” informed a source.

“People all over the taluka have had symptoms of cold, cough and fever. With no restrictions imposed, those who also have infections are moving freely without any precautions, further contributing in the spread of the virus.”
