The driver and a nurse had a lucky escape when an ambulance attached to the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) caught fire at Karmalghat, while returning from a trip to transport a patient to Hospicio Hospital in Margao on Thursday afternoon.
The CHC ambulance was partially damaged in the incident. According to sources, a short circuit in battery is believed to have caused the fire and driver sensed trouble and swiftly stopped the vehicle by the roadside at Karmalghat.
The alert driver then quickly grabbed two oxygen cylinders from the ambulance to avert any explosion and then alerted the fire services.
