Several parts of Canacona taluka have been reportedly hit by erratic water supply since the last fortnight.

The areas including Char-Rasta, Nagorcem, Kindlem, Mastimoll and some other parts of Canacona municipal area, besides the villages of Agonda, Shristhal, Poinguinim and Loliem have been repeatedly hit by the erratic water supply.

“No need to name any particular locality, but the problems are encountered daily in most localities of the villages,” informed Shridhar Mahale of Poinguinim.

When contacted, Canacona AE PWD (Water Supply) Lester Fernandes at first refused to acknowledge the claims of erratic water supply and even went on to ask this correspondent to name any specific locality.

The engineer, however, admitted that there has been a problem on Saturday due to the 8-hour long power shut down.

When some affected areas were mentioned to Fernandes, he claimed that no such complaint had been brought to his notice, but assured to look into the matter.

“No complaint from these areas have reached me, but there was some problem on Saturday which was mainly due to the long power shutdown. Water supply will be normal from Sunday,” he said.

The assistant engineer later stated that the water level had gone down at the Ordhofond pumphouse, making it difficult to operate a pump at the site.

The PWD (Water supply) gets its supply from two different sources to operates the water treatment plants at Shristhal.

According to sources, the daily requirement of about 11 MLD is sufficient for the entire taluka. However, they are getting only 6 MLD from Chapoli Dam, which is being treated at both the treatment plants at Shristhal.

With water levels at the Ordhofond pumphouse having dropped, pump attendants find it difficult to pump water from Ordhofond to be supplied to the treatment plants at Shristhal.

On the other hand, Irrigation (WRD) AE Patil manning the Chapoli dam informed that Canacona’s lifeline has enough stock of water, and it is up to the PWD as to how much they are able to pump out from the Chapoli dam.

As on Saturday, the water level at Chapoli dam was 33.16 RL (reduced level), which is slightly lower than the 33.92 RL for the corresponding period last year.
