A brazen attempt by three women from Delhi to rob the mangalsutra of a woman boarding a bus at the Canacona bus stand was foiled by locals on Saturday, as they nabbed two women while they were fleeing with half of the mangalsutra.
The incident took place as Sulaksha Velip of Cotigao had finished shopping at the busy weekly bazaar and was boarding a bus at the KTC bus stand to return home.
She then felt someone from behind pulling her gold mangalsutra. On looking back, she saw three women behind her, and one of them had put her hands on her neck and tried to snatch her mangalsutra.
Velip swiftly realised that the women were in the process of snatching her mangalsutra, and she clung on to it. In the process, the mangalsutra broke into two pieces and while one portion remained with Velip, the other portion was grabbed by one of the accused, and she began to flee from the site along with the two other women.
Velip raised an alarm and alerted people inside the KTC bus stand. The three women ran out from the KTC complex and began proceeding on the road towards Chaudi market.
Some locals followed them on scooters, and others ran behind them and intercepted two of the three women as they were trying to mingle with people at the busy weekly Saturday bazaar in Chaudi.
One woman, however, disappeared among the people shopping at the bazaar, while locals surrounded the two women who covered their faces with their dupattas.
In the meanwhile, Velip reached the site and showed the locals one piece of the mangalsutra which was in her possession. Left with no option after being surrounded by locals, one of the two women handed over to Velip the other piece of the mangalsutra she had snatched from her.
The two accused, who were later identified as Radha Velgi and Anita Rangaswami, both from Delhi, were later handed over to the police.
