Stressing that people should know about the horrors of partition of India, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Sunday said that the pain of partition can never be forgotten but emphasised that it should never be repeated.
Khaunte also said that there was a need to pay homage to those people who went through pain and horror during the partition.
“The horrors of partition were very painful. We need to propagate the message of communal harmony. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence we need to pass on the information about partition to the next generation,” Khaunte said.
The Tourism Minister was speaking after inaugurating an exhibition of “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” at the KTC bus-stand in Mapusa. Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA, Joshua D’Souza was also present.
The exhibition organised by the State government displays various pictures depicting the struggle and suffering the people underwent during the partition of India and Pakistan.
Speaking further, Khaunte said the exhibition was part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative which is celebrated across the country.
He said while celebrating the platinum jubilee of India’s Independence, it was important for everyone to understand and remember the horrors that people underwent during the partition.
“This exhibition is to share information about the partition and the horrors that took place then. During the partition people were divided on the basis of religion,” he said.
The exhibition will remain open to the public at the Mapusa bus-stand.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced commemorating August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day “in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people”.
August 14 also marks Pakistan’s independence day.
