SANGUEM
A woman and a child were killed while a third person was reportedly missing when a car went off the bridge and plunged into the Sangameshwar river at Taripanto-Sanguem late Monday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Rekha Naik and Devyansh Naik, while the third person is reported to be Milind Naik, all from Kuinamol in Kalay-Sanguem.
While it was unclear how the car (GA-01-R-9158) went off the bridge, it is believed that the driver lost control of the car at a slope before the bridge at about 7 pm.
A Sanguem police team led by Police Inspector Pravin Gawas rushed to the site and also summoned the Curchorem Fire Services for rescue operations.
The operations were hampered due to darkness and heavy flow of water. It took nearly two hours for the fire services to pull out the ill-fated car from the river with the help of a crane.
While the bodies of Rekha Naik and Devyansh Naik were retrieved from the vehicle, Milind Naik, was reportedly missing and efforts were on to locate him.
A large crowd gathered at the site as the car was being pulled out from the river. Sanguem Mamlatdar and Curchorem PI Vaibhav Naik was also present at the site.
