A car rammed into two roadside shops at Maxem bazaar on Thursday morning, causing damage to both shops, the car and a stationary two-wheeler. However, no one was hurt in the incident.

According to reports, the Karnataka-registered car (KA-53-ME-3919) was proceeding along the highway from Karwar  when the vehicle went to its extreme left and rammed into two roadside shops at Maxem Bazaar at about 10 am.

Both shops, owned by Ulhas Fugro and Mahesh Warik, were badly damaged in the incident, while the motorcycle of a village baker was also damaged. No injuries were reported.

Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Ajay Lolienkar and others later visited the area to take stock of the mishap.

The highway which passes through the bazaar areas of Maxem (Loliem-Polem) and Poinguinim has posed a constant threat to residents in the area.

Frequent road mishaps in these areas have prompted people to demand proper regulation of the increased traffic along the Canacona-Karwar stretch of the highway, following a closure of the Anmod Ghat in Ponda taluka.

The ongoing construction of the 7.7 km four-lane stretch of the highway along with three bridges at Talpona, Galgibaga and Maxem will bypass the narrow and danger-prone stretch passing through thickly populated areas in Loliem-Polem and Poinguinim. CM Pramod Sawant indicated on Wednesday that this project is expected to be completed by July 20.
