Agitated residents of Olvaddo, Carmona took to the streets outside the Verda resort on late Sunday evening to protest against the permission granted by the authorities to the hotel to play music on New Year eve.
Colva police rushed to the spot as a precautionary measure, with Colva police station in-charge, PI Filomena Costa stating that the resort had the permission from the authorities to play music till 12 pm. The residents, however, pointed out that the loud music was being played inside the resort, disturbing the residents staying in the thickly populated area. They demanded to know how the authorities could issue the permission to the resort to play loud music in a residential locality and when the local panchayat body has not renewed the licence for the establishment.
PI Costa pointed out that the police has nothing to do with the dispute, if any, between the panchayat and the resort, adding that the police have to ensure only law and order.
A local resident Wenzy Viegas informed that the loud music played at the resort was indeed causing disturbance in the locality, adding that this was one reason why the residents had lodged their strong objection to the permission granted by the authorities.
Police later told the organisers to reduce the sound decibel and ensure that the music is stopped as per the permission. Police personnel were posted at the spot as a precautionary measure.
Local residents from Olvaddo, Carmona had on December 27 petitioned to the Carmona panchayat, besides the Colva police, Collector and the Salcete BDO against granting permission for the resort to play loud music on New Year eve since the establishment is located in a thickly residential area.
