According to sources, the CBI team visited the UBI bank to conduct preliminary investigations into a scam of Rs 70 lakh alleged by a Vasco-based businessman Mahesh Toshniwal.
"The enquiry went on during lunch break and the bank's shutters were closed during the investigation," informed the source.
Stepping out of the bank after the initial enquiry, CBI PI Rupesh Parab informed The Goan that the primary investigation was underway.
"The CBI had not arrived at any conclusion. The branch manager was very cooperative and I cannot disclose any details regarding our inquiry," PI Parab said.
"A preliminary enquiry has to be conducted before registering any FIR. We are conducting a preliminary enquiry and if there is an offence, we will definitely register a case," PI Parab added.
It may be recalled that Toshniwal had alleged that the UBI had cheated him to the tune of Rs 70 lakh by withdrawing money from his account and claimed he was forced to approach the CBI since the local police was not registering a case based on his police complaint.
"I am now hopeful of justice as the CBI has begun investigations in the matter," Toshniwal told The Goan.
