Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro finally reacted to the decimation of Congress-backed United Panaji Front (UPF) in the recent polls to Corporation of City of Panaji by declaring that the Congress movement has made a strong and definitive comeback at the grassroots level in Panaji and Taleigao.
In a press statement released on Friday, GPCC president Faleiro stated, “The greatest reward is that the Congress movement has made a strong and definitive comeback at the grassroots level in Panaji and Taleigao. What matters is building a fresh base of party workers who believe in the ideology of the party and who will stand up for the cause of people, instead of playing into politics of convenience all the time.”
He also sought to congratulate Congress CCP in-charge, Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar for accepting the responsibility and actively spearheading the campaign.
“GPCC is proud of Madkaikar for keeping the Congress flag high in areas where we had negligible presence. Even though I am aware that UPF was unable to gain any seats in CCP elections, what is to be appreciated are the sincere efforts that were put in this exercise by the entire team,” Faleiro stated.
He praised Madkaikar for "leading the party from the front in these most testing times and hostile circumstances," which he said included misuse of government machinery and money power by other groups.
Interestingly, GPCC president claimed that both BJP and Babush-led group were in alliance for sharing the posts of mayor and deputy mayor even as the elections were declared.
Congress held that its executive body decision to extend support to UPF was aimed at giving people of Panaji and Taleigao a second option from the power-hungry ruling dispensation.
