PANAJI
Sweepers and garbage collectors working for the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) have put their protest on hold after the mayor called for a meeting regarding their demands on Tuesday.
Workers belonging to the CCP Employees Union had earlier in the day threatened to stop collecting garbage in the city from November 20, when the 47th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) begins.
However, later in the evening, a notice was put up regarding a scheduled meeting on November 22 to discuss their demands with the management.
The union has demanded for an increase in their medical and uniform allowances, by making them on par with other municipalities.
“Currently, municipalities in Vasco and Margao receive medical allowances amounting to Rs 6,000 but we receive only Rs 4,000. Being a corporation, we should be at par, if not more than the rest of the municipalities,” said sweeper Shyam.
Among their other demands, the workers have also asked for an increase in the full uniform allowance from Rs 3,800 to Rs 6,500 and a partial uniform allowance from Rs 3,300 to Rs 6,000. They have also asked for an increase in the washing allowance, from Rs 300 to Rs 1,500 and garbage collection allowance from Rs 300 to Rs 1,500. The demands also include timely delivery of salaries.
