CCTVs to keep eye on violators on Cavelossim-Assolna bridge

MARGAO
Over a decade since the crucial bridge over River Sal was thrown open for traffic, the Big Brother has made its presence felt on the Cavelossim-Assolna bridge.

With complaints galore that the bridge is being misused by unscrupulous elements to indulge in anti-social activities and traffic on the bridge is disrupted because of vehicles parked on the bridge, the Cavelossim panchayat headed by Sarpanch Dixon Vaz on Friday installed high resolution Closed Circuit TV surveillance cameras on the bridge.

The panchayat has also installed no parking boards on the portion of the bridge falling under the Cavelossim panchayat jurisdiction, sending a clear message to motorists that the vehicular parking now stands banned on the bridge. The high resolution solar cameras have cost the panchayat body around Rs 1.20 lakh. “We have installed the cameras to monitor the vehicles parked on the bridge causing inconveniences to the travellers,” Dixon said, adding that the Traffic police will act against all those violating the no parking norms.

“The panchayat will write to SP South to directly fine the violators and send the challans directly to their homes,” Dixon added.

After inaugurating the CCTV cameras, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas complimented the Cavelossim panchayat executing the CCTV project after the inspection held on September 6 last. “We had an inspection in the month of September last. The Cavelossim Sarpanch was quick to implement the decision to install the CCTV cameras on the Cavelossim bridge,” Venzy said, adding that he would approach the Orlim panchayat to explore the possibility of installing CCTV cameras at the Orlim bridge.

He added:  “The common goal of the seven villages in Benaulim constituency is the safety and security of our citizens, the villagers, people and the travellers on the bridges. The Cavelossim Sarpanch has achieved the goal in the village. This is a call for all the sarpanchas to put in their good work for the people.”
