Celebrating ability: Boy with cerebral palsy who fixes what’s broken

Celebrating ability: Boy with cerebral palsy who fixes what’s broken

PANAJI

The world observed World Cerebral Palsy Day on October 6 ” a day to raise awareness about the condition and celebrate the lives of millions living with it. Around us, there are many who prove that cerebral palsy does not define their limits. Among them is Geridhar Salil Ajgaonkar from Marcel, who are rewriting their stories in inspiring ways.

Geridhar, a Class VII student at Lokvishwas Saunsthan, struggles to speak fluently or follow complex instructions. Yet, he has moved far beyond traditional learning. He has taught himself several practical skills ” from repairing gadgets to playing musical instruments.

Son of Salil and Sakshi Ajgaonkar, Geridhar was not diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. His parents noticed differences as he grew older. Raising him was full of challenges, as even simple tasks like eating or moving required help. His development was slow and uncertain. But things began to change after the birth of his younger brother. Watching his sibling walk, eat, and drink on his own, Geridhar tried to copy him ” and slowly, he did.

Today, Geridhar is largely independent. Though he still cannot walk without support, he eats by himself and engages actively with his surroundings. His father recalls, “When his younger brother was born, everything changed. It became a turning point for all of us.”

Geridhar’s real gift lies in his curiosity about how things work. “He has a natural sense for understanding mechanical objects,” says Salil. “He can open up clocks, watches, or toys, study their parts, and fix them ” all by watching YouTube videos.” Salil remembers the day his old watch stopped working. “I was about to throw it away, but Geridhar asked for it. After working on it for hours, he fixed it ” and it’s still running three years later.”

His school first noticed his talent when a classroom clock stopped working. While the staff thought of buying a new one, Geridhar offered to fix it ” and he did, on the spot. “He doesn’t just repair things; he understands their mechanism,” says one of his teachers.

Geridhar’s curiosity extends beyond machines. He recently learned to play the Ghumat and then the harmonium, both without formal lessons. His rhythm and confidence impressed his music teacher. He also enjoys drawing and has won prizes for his artwork. At home, he helps his father make paper bags and creates different types of envelopes on his own. “He doesn’t need instructions,” says Salil. “He just observes and learns. He’s the superhero of his own life.”

Geridhar’s story is not just about overcoming disability ” it’s about redefining success. In a world that measures ability through academic scores, he reminds us that curiosity, creativity, and practical learning are equally powerful.

“He may not have a clear goal yet,” admits Salil, “but his hunger to learn is more valuable than any syllabus.”

At Lokvishwas Saunsthan, teachers have given Geridhar the freedom to explore and express himself. They now see him not only as a student with special needs but as a young innovator with potential. What lies ahead may be uncertain, but his journey is full of promise. Whether he becomes a technician, a musician, or something else entirely, he will do it with heart, courage, and determination.

As his parents say, “Geridhar has taught us more than we could ever teach him. Learning doesn’t need a classroom ” just a spark and the will to grow.”

Geridhar’s journey is a celebration of resilience and individuality ” a reminder that every child’s talent deserves to shine, no matter how different their path may be.
