According to Jayakumar, he was at the yard on Sunday morning to check if there was any oil leakage in the sea, where the ship is grounded. “When I reached the site, I saw a layer of dark oil on the surface of the water,” he said. “I immediately alerted the Coast Guard about the leakage and requested it to deploy ICGS Sumadra Prahari and boom the area to curtail the oil spillage beyond the yard area,” informed Jayakumar. Jayakumar added that the WISL workers have fully cooperated with MPT and the company officials will arrive with the material and a special team from Mumbai and start the pumping operation. Speaking to the media, Coast Guard DIG Manoj V Baadkar said when they received the message from Jayakumar, he immediately left to the site with ICGS Sumadra Prahari and after inspecting the waters, the Coast Guard started the booming operation. Baadkar said there was spillage of oil, but not from the tanks containing 350 tonnes of oil. “The oil leakage is from the engine room and though the quantity is not much, we have laid the booms to avoid the oil from spreading beyond the yard area,” said Baadkar. Baadkar added that since the leaked oil might affect fishing, the Coast Guard has taken precautionary measures to curtail further spillage.
