Chaos prevailed at the Vasco Railway Station on Wednesday evening as hundreds of people left for Jharkhand and other states ahead of the four-day lockdown announced by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
According to reports, a large number of migrant workers began leaving their rooms and made preparations to leave for their home states, as soon as the CM announced a lockdown in the State.
A large number of workers from Jharkhand and northern states rushed to the Vasco railway station, to avoid getting stranded in the State on account of a lockdown.
The Vasco railway station saw crowds of people waiting for getting their tickets to board the Vasco-Patna Express, which was to leave at 7.10 pm on Wednesday.
"There was a mad rush of people and we could seen them in fear and anxiety as they began arriving at the station. By evening, the situation turned chaotic with the platform almost full of people,” said a source in the Vasco railway station.
“The Vasco-Patna Express left overcrowded on Wednesday evening and there was not an inch of space available in the general bogies of the train.”
“Many had bad experiences of the previous lockdown when they were stuck in Goa with no work, no food, shelter and medical aid," the source added.
Meanwhile, social media was flooded with pictures of hundreds of migrant labourers at railway station awaiting a train to take them back to their native states.
Some netizens also appealed to people to raise funds to help the workers buy tickets while some appealed to other passengers to provide food and water to the migrant workers, who may not have money to buy food and water during the two-day train journey from Goa.
