The traffic police department on Tuesday morning removed the barricades at the busy O’Coqueiro junction at Porvorim, one of the busiest junctions along the highway between Panaji and Mapusa, allowing movement of traffic from B B Borkar road to proceed towards Sangolda and Mapusa.
Dy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle and Traffic Police Inspector Naryan Chimulkar observed traffic movement after removal of barricades and gave necessary instruction to the traffic police on duty.
The barricades had been placed after commissioning of traffic signals to prevent traffic movement from B B Borkar road towards Sangolda and Mapusa. This forced vehicles from B B Borkar road to proceed towards Holy Family Church via the Defence Colony road, increasing traffic along the Defence Colony road.
After several attempts by residents of Defence Colony to get the Traffic Police to remove the barricades at O’Coqueiro junction failed, they met Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte to resolve the issue.
Khaunte along with DySP Angle and PWD Assistant Engineer (Roads) Eduard Pereira inspected traffic at the signals on March 10 and agreed to remove the barricades at O’Coqueiro junction to allow traffic from B B Borkar road towards Sangolda and Mapusa on a one-month trial basis.
Accordingly, the traffic police removed the barricades at O’Coqueiro junction on Tuesday morning.
Speaking to The Goan, DySP Angle said they had removed the barricades following a suggestion by Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte.
“We will observe traffic movement and then take a final decision,” said DySP Angle.
