MARGAO
Call it a Ganesh Chaturthi gift or otherwise, around 270-odd Margao Municipal employees will be entitled for a higher pay scale with the civic body extending the benefits of Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme after almost three decades.
The MMC has also promoted around nine employees, including a head clerk, a market inspector, UDCs, etc. The civic body had earlier promoted around 34 employees couple of months ago.
The financial implications for the civic body after the extension of the MACP scheme to the 270-odd employees is pegged around Rs 1.70 crore.
Briefing the media on Thursday after placing the MACP and DPC decision before the MMC Standing Committee, Chairperson Damu Shirodkar said the 270-odd Municipal employees had been waiting for the MACP scheme benefits for the last 30 years, but in vain. “The decision taken by the Council to extend the benefit of the MACP scheme is indeed a Ganesh Chaturthi gift for these 270-odd employees,” he said.
Shirodkar added: “I had started the exercise of extending the benefit of the MACP scheme to the employees around seven months ago. These employees were entitled for the MACP benefits since they did not get their promotions after completing 10 years of service. Finally, the Council has extended the benefits of the scheme to the employees.”
The Margao civic chief said there may be people who resort to loud talk in the civic body, but they had never put in efforts to implement the MACP scheme to the 270-odd Municipal employees.
“This is the first time in the recent history of the Margao Municipal Council that so many employees have got their promotions and the MACP. The civic body has meted out justice to the employees during my stint in office,” he added.
