The Chicalim Sub District hospital has started a martial arts workshop for female staff of the hospital, following the shocking rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata which outraged the nation.

Speaking to reporters, Chicalim SDH incharge Dr Sujata Kamat said the training was being offered to female staff by martial arts instructor Suraj Paradkar.

“This initiative has been taken in the wake of rising incidents of crimes against women in the last few months. We have realised that it is very very important for females to learn self-defence because nowadays we cannot expect someone else to defend you or help you out. It is always good to be self-dependent and independent yet strong mentally and physically,” said Dr Kamat.

“We decided to train out staff in basic self-defence techniques and luckily, one of our staff sister Sneha Mandrekar knew Suraj Paradkar, who holds classes in martial arts. Paradkar agreed to conduct the training free of cost and we are grateful to him.”

Dr Kamat said the staff showed good response and the initiative was a success.

“Our staff were trained in basic tactics of self-defence, which will help defend themselves during untoward incidents,” said Dr Kamat.

Martial arts instructor Suraj Paradkar, a 5th degree black belt and chief instructor of the Champions Club in Goa, said around 40 female staff participating in the self-defence workshop.

“I thank the Chicalim SDH for approaching us. We have taught them basic steps towards self-defence and also trained them for ground fight. This training will help them protect themselves during untoward incidents.”

“I appeal to schools and educational institutions in Goa to have martial arts and self-defence as a compulsory subject to help all girls and boys train at a very young age,” said Paradkar.
