Residents have demanded immediate action against illegal permanent vendors operating in Chicalim, alleging that the encroachments have become a major nuisance and are adversely affecting the quality of life of local residents.
During a meeting, villagers pointed out that the spaces in question were originally designated only for movable hand carts and temporary vending. However, they alleged that several vendors have illegally erected permanent structures, violating the purpose for which the sites were allotted.
Residents expressed concern that the unauthorised structures have led to multiple civic and law-and-order issues in the locality. They claimed that the area has witnessed incidents of eve teasing, creating a sense of insecurity among women and young girls. Villagers also complained about illegal parking of taxi vehicles on public roads, saying it causes traffic congestion and obstructs the free movement of pedestrians and motorists.
The residents further alleged that open urination by some individuals, indiscriminate dumping of garbage and poor sanitation have made the locality unhygienic. They said the accumulation of waste has become a breeding ground for foul smell and health hazards, while the lack of cleanliness has affected the residential character of the area.
Villagers urged authorities concerned to conduct an inspection and take immediate action by removing all illegal permanent structures operating in the residential zone. They stressed that only movable hand carts, as originally permitted, should be allowed to function in the designated spaces.
The residents also called for stricter enforcement against illegal parking, improved sanitation measures and regular monitoring to ensure that public spaces are not misused.
They warned that if prompt action is not taken, the problems are likely to worsen, further affecting the safety, hygiene and overall well-being of the Chicalim community.
