While rapping the investigating officers for shoddy probe, the Children’s Court on Friday acquitted a migrant labourer accused of murdering a two-year-old girl of a co-worker family.
The migrant labourer from Kakkeri, Karnataka in December 2015 had been booked by the Margao police under section 302, 201 of IPC and 2(m)(iii) sec 8(2) of Chidren’s Act 2003.
It was alleged that the accused after murdering the girl dumped the body wrapped in a bag in a jungle at Ramnagar.
The parents of the girl who were known to the accused complained that the accused took their daughter to Karnataka and killed her when they were working at a site in Navelim. Post the murder, there was much delay in registering the offence as the police from the two police stations of Karnataka and Margao primarily refused to register the offense over jurisdiction issue.
Police could not provide the documentation to prove their claim that the accused was detained by the Halga police station and Nandgad police station for total 10 days before being officially arrested by the Margao police.
The order stated, “No official record to justify detention of the accused in police custody amounts to illegal detention and transportation of the accused from Nandgad to Margao town.”
Police, however, were successful in finding a decomposed body, likely to be of the two-year-old girl, but the gender of the body could not be ascertained through forensic examination.
The clothes and other evidences which were sent to CFSL Hyderabad were later misplaced by the police.
