Chimbel locals oppose naming of committees at special gram sabha

OLD GOA

Even as the special gram sabha was held at Chimbel on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the locals opposed the naming of the committees at the meeting as they said that the same should be appointed at the ordinary gram sabha.

When the issue of appointing the committees namely the village development committee, garbage management committee, etc was taken up, the villagers pointed out that there needs to be larger participation of the people for the committees to be appointed.

Citing the memorandum wherein the Director of Panchayats has withdrawn her earlier notice for naming biodiversity management committee, a local Ajay Kholkar questioned how other committees can be appointed at the special gram sabha.

“The withdrawal of the memorandum itself is suggestive that committees cannot be appointed at special gram sabhas and the same should be named at ordinary gram sabhas,” Kholkar pointed out.

Kholkar found support from the other locals, following which sarpanch Sandesh Shirodkar informed that the committees will be appointed at the ordinary gram sabha which will be held later in the month. The issue of garbage, fatal accidents at the Chimbel junction were also raised by the locals who urged the sarpanch to address the issues on an urgent basis. Sarpanch Shirodkar said that he has already started a campaign against the dumping of garbage in the open in his ward and the same will be extended to other wards as well.

At the Chimbel junction, Shirodkar said that he has already spoken to the higher authorities on the issue and that he will seek an appointment with the chief minister for discussion on the issue.

Meanwhile, a local Tukaram Kunkolkar has demanded that henceforth the gram sabha meetings should be held in open areas to accommodate the large number of people attending the same.

"Due to lack of space many participants are forced to stand in cramped areas," Kunkolkar pointed out. The sarpanch had agreed to hold the next gram sabha in an open area.
