OLD GOA Chinchwada locals demanded that the panchayat conduct an inspection of the building where the towers are installed and direct immediate removal of it. Raising the issue at the Gram Sabha on Sunday, Cleto Pereira informed that the locals of Chinchwada residing within the vicinity came to know of the clandestine installation of the cellphone towers after some personnel from a mobile services company visited the area. Pereira demanded that the panchayat authorities conduct an inspection of the building and direct immediate removal of the towers. Replying on the issue, Deputy Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar informed that the panchayat authorities along with the concerned locals will conduct inspection of the building in the coming week and take necessary action. When questioned whether the panchayat authorities have given any permission for installation of the cellphone towers, Kunkolkar replied in the negative. Speaking on the subject, Lourdes Conception reminded the panchayat that the locals have passed a resolution several years back that the panchayat would not allow installation of cellphone towers anywhere within the vicinity of Chimbel village. The issue of rejection of a proposal from Paul Fernandes by the panchayat generated much heat with Fernandes questioning the authority of the panchayat in rejecting the same. “Proposals submitted for the Gram Sabha should be discussed at the Gram Sabha and the panchayat does not have any powers to reject proposals from the public,” Fernandes pleaded but to no avail as his proposal was not allowed to be taken up. The garbage issue also figured at the meeting.
