Chimbel wants garbage sentinels to tackle black spots

OLD GOA: The Chimbel Garbage Management Committee has suggested a garbage sentinel scheme, along the lines of traffic sentinel scheme, to deal with black spots in the village.
The suggestion was made at the garbage committee meeting on Tuesday, against the backdrop of the High Court directing panchayats to clear black spots in its jurisdictions.
“Just like traffic sentinels, garbage sentinels too could be rewarded for reporting persons dumping garbage in the open,” suggested one of the committee members which would go a long way in tackling black spots.
Meanwhile, the panchayat has decided to clear the black spots in the village in the coming days as well as install signboards warning of severe penalty to those found dumping garbage indiscriminately.
However, there was no consensus on ways to ensure the areas remain clean thereafter as many suggestions were put forth, including installation of CCTV cameras, which the panchayat found a costly affair.
A decision was, however, taken to appoint a full time supervisor who would make the rounds of these areas and report anybody found dumping waste.
It was also decided to send warning notices to the residential colonies where waste segregation is lacking and at a later date, initiate action as per the solid waste management rules applicable in the State.
