The village Panchayat of Chinchinim has made a fresh bid in support of its demand for the construction of a road bypass instead of a flyover on the NH66 passing through the village.
Village Sarpanch Frank Viegas submitted a memorandum to South Goa MP Capt. Viriato Fernandes and Velim MLA Engr. Cruz Silva regarding NH66 Dandeavaddo bypass road on stilts. Both the MP and the MLA have assured their full support to the villagers in support of their demand for construction of the road bypass instead of the building the highway on stilts.
The Sarpanch informed that the Chinchinim panchayat had been knocking the doors of the all and sundry in the recent years with a plea to build a road bypass instead of a flyover at Dandeavaddo.
“Since Captain Viriato has now been elected as the new South Goa MP, the Panchayat has decided to hand over a fresh memorandum to the MP to take up the issue in Delhi”, Frank said.
He expressed satisfaction that the MP has promised to raise the issue with Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Delhi.
Meanwhile, the Chinchinim Panchayat organised a comprehensive awareness and training programme for women in shell art and mud crab cultivation, demonstrating its commitment to empowering local women and reviving traditional agricultural and aquaculture practices.
The event was conducted in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra under the Directorate of Agriculture.
The shell art training, led by experts from the Directorate of Fisheries, aimed to equip women with the skills to create beautiful art pieces from shells, tapping into Goan cultural heritage and promoting local craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra provided training session on mud crab cultivation, a profitable and sustainable practice that has seen increased interest among local farmers.
Sarpanch Frank Viegas highlighted the importance of traditional Goan fish curry and rice, describing it as "dear to our hearts." He emphasised the Panchayat’s initiative to revive agriculture and fish ponds, which are integral to Goan culture and cuisine. "Our efforts are aimed at not just preserving our heritage but also creating sustainable livelihoods for our community members," Viegas noted.
