Addressing the gathering at Goa University’s 29th annual convocation ceremony, GU Vice Chancellor Varun Sahni said, “From the coming academic year, we will introduce the choice-based credit system at the undergraduate level, a vital step in the direction for creating modular education packages.”
Stating that the objective of introducing CBCS is to allow each student to pursue his or her interests with passion and complete dedication, he said, “Through this all preferences like choosing dramatics rather than biochemistry are treated as legitimate and valid, the arbitrary distinction between curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular learning is eliminated and sports, culture and value education become seamlessly intertwined.”
Stating that GU is in the process of amalgamating certain departments to create new schools of study, Sahni informed that the varsity Executive Council has approved the creation of a School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences out of the currently existing Departments of Earth Science and Marine Science.
Speaking further, he said, “Even as we deploy new technologies in education, we need to appreciate the knowledge that exists in living traditions and social practices, especially marginal knowledge traditions. As part of skill enhancement courses at the undergraduate level, we intend to recognise traditional master craftsmen and women as instructors and examiners, thereby
acknowledging that they have very significant
skills and knowledge
to impart to the younger generation.”
