Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Eduardo Faleiro on Monday said the Chowkidar Chor Hai slogan apparently did not go down well with the people in the run up to the Lok Sabha election.
He, however, said that with Prime Minister Narendra Modi back to power with a bigger mandate, all the people of India, including the majority community and the minorities, should work together for the unity and integrity of
the country.
Addressing Congressmen at the South Goa district office on the occasion of the death anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, Faleiro said the Chowkidar Chor Hai slogan may not have gone down well with the people of the country.
“Someone calls the Prime Minister a chor and without explaining what has been robbed by the person must not have gone down well. What has happened has happened and the Congress should now rededicate itself towards nation building,” he said.
Saying that India is the only place on earth which plays host to the largest number of religious and other communities, Faleiro said the founder leaders of the country, including the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the father of Indian Constitution Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar ensured adequate safeguards are made in the Constitution to protect the interests of all communities.
Senior Congress leader M K Sheikh and district Congress chief Joe Dias also addressed the programme, which was attended by only around 20 workers. Neither MLAs from Salcete nor any of the senior leaders from the taluka attended the event.
