Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar on Sunday said the Margao Municipality has geared up its machinery to meet any eventuality in the ensuing monsoons.
Saying the MMC has started monsoon preparedness by carrying out desilting of the drains, Damu said the MMC has taken up the work departmentally by engaging its manpower.
Briefing the media, the MMC Civic Chief said the civic body will constitute a gang of labourers with basic equipments during the monsoons to attend to calamities. He said the concept was put into effect last monsoons and had provided good results.
On the de-silting of the storm water nullahs across the city, the MMC Chief pointed out that work on the desilting the major nullahs is being carried out by the Water Resources department.
“Like every year, the WRD will take up the de-silting work of the nullahs this year as well. The major nullahs are taken up for desilting just when the monsoons sets in”, he said.
The MMC Chief has made a fervent plea to the citizens not to dump their garden and green waste onto the roads after cleaning their backyards.
“We are facing difficulties in handling the green and garden waste. Instead of disposing of the waste on the roads, citizens should call the civic body to handle the waste”, he said.
To a question, Damu said the MMC is in the process of purchasing machinery to treat the garden and green waste.
