'Clean Margao Green Margao' Mission to launch dry waste collection on Feb 21

To plant coconut, betel nut trees near SGPDA area in support of govt's stand on this issue

'Clean Margao Green Margao' Mission will launch its dry waste collection drive from Comba Wards no 11 and 12 on a pilot basis with the help of Fomento Green from February 21 at 10 a.m.

Disclosing this at a press conference, Rajendra Talak said South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, MMC chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai, South Goa Collector Dr Sachin Shinde and MMC Chief Officer Siddhivinayak Naik will launch the drive in Comba on that day.

“A door-to-door campaign will be launched for creating awareness and giving guidelines for segregation of garbage from February 15,” Talak informed, while stating that a similar campaign will be conducted in three schools, and prizes will be awarded every month for the lucky winners participating in the project.

Taking a review of this Mission launched last year, Talak referred to the works undertaken at SGPDA market and pending works at fish and vegetable market, as well as works completed in Comba, Aquem areas.

He said Sulabh toilets after repairs and beautification will be operational from February 20 at the SGPDA market. The Compost Treatment Plant at SGPDA market will treat the entire waste of SGPDA market, Talak informed. He claimed the Mission will also undertake cleaning of the fish and vegetable markets after which the Mission will provide clean water to the market for cleaning purposes, to be undertaken between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Talak said work on erection of the gantry near Collector building will commence from March 10 to be completed by March 20.

“The concrete foundation work has already been completed up to 60 cms from the ground level,” Talak informed, while pegging the total cost of this gantry, including beautification at Rs 25 lakh.

Those present for the press conference included former MMC councillor Narayan Pai Fondekar, Ranjeeta Pai, Adv Rajiv Shinkre, Raj Panandikar and Adhish Kare.

Talak strongly endorses govt's stand on coconut tree issue

MARGAO: Talak said the Mission will also undertake plantation of 30 coconut and betel nut trees along the borders of SGPDA area on the Panaji­-Margao main road. Throwing the gauntlet at critics, Talak said those who love coconut trees should come with him to water this area.

Strongly endorsing the govt's stand on the coconut tree issue, Talak pointed out that it will enable a poor person to cut an old coconut tree which is in danger of crashing onto his house. He said even when the coconut tree was not included in the Forest till the year 2008, the forest cover had risen from 38 lakh trees to 48 lakh.
