MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council is heading for fresh trouble on the door-to-door waste collection front, with the Fatorda contractor serving a notice on the civic body expressing his intention to stop collecting garbage from next month.
Now that the contractor has intimated he would stop collecting waste door to door from Fatorda and the same time municipality expressing unhappiness with Margao contractor’s work, questions are raised in the corridors of the civic body whether a new tender will be floated or the task would be handled departmentally.
“Let us wait and see how the council deals with the matter. Since the council meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, we expect the councillors to take a call on how to go about waste collection,” informed acting MMC Chairperson Tito Cardozo.
Confirming that the contractor engaged in the door-to-door waste collection from the Fatorda area of the city has served a notice on the civic body, the acting Chairperson said the city fathers will deliberate on the situation on Tuesday before taking a decision.
It is learnt that the contractor has expressed his intention to collect the waste door to door up to September 15, leaving the civic body in a piquant situation.
A municipal official looking after solid waste management said the civic body will have to take some concrete decisions on waste collection if the contractor is hell bent in calling it quits.
“The civic body had been practically tension free when the work of door-to-door waste collection in Fatorda area was handled by the contractor. We will have to work out an alternate solution if the contractor stick to his guns,” the official added.
Questions are raised whether the civic body would look at the problem in a holistic manner, given that the decision to outsource the work did not yield the expected results.
Though labour contractors were engaged from time to time to collect waste from the doorsteps of the civic body over the years, waste segregation at source continues to eludes the Margao Municipal Council till date.
