All eyes are focused on the Margao Municipal Council meeting scheduled on Tuesday, which is expected to discuss threadbare the Sonsodo imbroglio, with just five days left for the arbitration hearing in the south district court and the council’s failure to come out with a solution to the Rs 14 crore termination payment claimed by Fomento.

The meeting also comes against the backdrop of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) claiming compensation to the tune of Rs 1.02 crore for causing damage to the environment on account of the week-long fire that engulfed the Sonsodo dump on May 25.

Acting Chairperson Tito Cardozo said the city fathers expect the Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik to brief the council at tomorrow’s meeting how the civic body should go about in resolving the issues vis-à-vis Sonsodo and whether the government is willing to intervene in the matter since the dump has been under the scanner of the High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC) headed by the Chief Minister.

“The Chief Officer had meetings with a few officials and the powers that be in the last few days on Sonsodo. Let us wait and listen to the Chief Officer on Tuesday how the civic body and the government will go about in resolving the issue, especially in respect of the arbitration proceedings initiated by Fomento,” an official stated.
