Due to the backlash from various quarters on the decision of closing routine tourist visits to the Cabo Raj Bhavan premises in Dona Paula, government authorities on Wednesday beat a hasty retreat and announced the withdrawal of their order within 24 hours.

“Raj Bhavan Darshan is reviewed along with the Superintendent of Police (security), and in view of the request from various quarters it is decided to open it for visitors,” stated Rupesh Kumar Thakur, the Secretary to the Governor in a press statement issued on Wednesday.

During the tenure of former Governor Mrudula Sinha the Cabo Raj Bhavan which is an archaeologically important site had been kept open for tourists, who booked online to visit the place.

The order of closure of Raj Bhavan for visitors for the next six months was issued after former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik took over.

In view of the security threat to Malik and subsequently to upgrade the security arrangements, it was decided to close regular visits to the Cabo Raj premises.

Meanwhile, the Raj Bhavan security arrangements have been heightened.

The release issued today asserted further, “Entry will be subject to police verification and frisking at the main gate of the Raj Bhavan.”

Malik who took the oath and charge as Goa governor on Sunday evening had earlier served as Governor of Jammu & Kashmir during a difficult situation following the August 5 abrogation of Article 370.

Catholic community residing in the area around the Governor’s residence have now heaved a sigh of relief as they will be able to have their Sunday services in the chapel at the Cabo.
