Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured a delegation of mining dependents that the debt relief scheme for mining dependents will be extended till September 2020, the head of the delegation Puti Gaonkar told the media on Thursday.

Gaonkar said the delegation met Sawant at his official Altinho residence and also urged him to fix an appointment for the mining dependents with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the mining issue and the Centre’s roadmap to restart the crucial industry which is at a standstill due to the Supreme Court imposed ban.

Sawant, whose government has moved the Supreme Court with a review petition in a bid to get the apex court’s okay to resolve the legal tangle which is blocking the recommencement of mining operations, also told the delegation that he is hopeful the industry will restart by the end of this year, Gaonkar said.

The debt relief scheme introduced by the government of the late chief minister Manohar Parrikar entitled truckers and other smaller entrepreneurs involved in the mining and iron ore transportation business to subsidy for repaying loans they availed before the ban.
