Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday inaugurated two Multi-Purpose Cyclone Shelters at Cuelim and Sancoale, and appealed to people to take good care of these shelters.

Sawant inaugurated the shelters in the presence of WRD Minister Shubash Shirodkar, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, ZPs Anita Thorat, Merciana Vas and elected members of Cortalim, Sancoale , Cansaulim, Velsao and Quelosssim Panchayats.

Addressing the media, Sawant said the cyclone shelters were capable of housing as many as 500 people during disasters and emergencies and 11 such cyclone shelters were being built across Goa under National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project “II.

“We cannot exactly say when there could be a cyclone or storm. However, the Indian Metrological Department is monitoring the situation and intimates the state from time to time and advises safety precautions,” said Sawant.

He said the Water Resources Department is the implementing agency for the project and this infrastructure has all facilities like sleeping area, toilets and even kitchen if the people have to be shifted even for a period of one month at a stretch.

“We also have a system where in case we hit the siren in Panaji, we will have the siren across all 11 cyclone shelters and this will activate the disaster management team who have been well trained to handle the emergencies.”

“We have inaugurated two shelters in Cortalim constituency and we are trying to find a solution on how these shelters can be well maintained by coordination between WRD and Panchayats,” he added.
