Describing facilities at Porvorim Gymkhana as among the best in the State, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured that fees of youth preparing for National Games and Olympics who utilise facilities at Porvorim Gymkhana will be borne by the government.

He also stated that the State government also proposes to set up hostel facilities for youth preparing for the National Games by using the facilities at Porvorim Gymkhana.

Sawant was speaking at Socorro after inaugurating the Porvorim Gymkhana in the presence of Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, Chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Michael Lobo, Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade and the panch members of Socorro, Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo.

The chief minister admitted that offering free facilities at the Porvorim Gymkhana was not possible in view of high maintenance costs.

Sawant said the State government has decided to plant 10 lakh saplings from Pollem to Pernem and called upon panchayats of Porvorim constituency to plant trees beneath and by the side of the flyover so as the area look green and clean.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the sports complex took nearly 13 years to complete due to change of contractors.

“Since maintenance costs are very high, it was decided to invite tenders and maintenance of these sports facilities at Porvorim Gymkhana was awarded to a professional company who will also provide coaching facilities to players,” said Khaunte.

“Since there is already a football ground at Salvador do Mundo, it has been decided to develop sports facilities like Futsal, Cricket, Pickleball, etc. in place of football at Socorro ground.”

GSIDC Chairperson Michael Lobo stated the Porvorim Gymkhana has been developed on 20,300 sq. mtrs of land offered by Serula communidade.

“The GSIDC has spent around Rs 58 crore to develop sports facilities at Porvorim Gymkhana. The cost of the project when the foundation stone was laid was Rs 38 crore in 2013. This project has been completed by 3 contractors. This is the best sports project of an international level developed by GSIDC,” said Lobo.

GSIDC Chief General Manager Dilip Joshi also spoke at the event.
