Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday assured the Goa Legislative Assembly to notify certain places of historic importance in the State which were not in the protected list so that the archaeological department can take up its maintenance work.
“Earlier the respective municipalities and panchayats were maintaining these places. We will now notify these places under the archaeological department,” Sawant said.
While raising the issue during the Question Hour, Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao said the Archaeology Department in a written reply had mentioned a list of 51 sites across Goa as “Protected Places”.
“I was surprised to note that Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim, Lohia Maidan at Margao, Azad Maidan, Panjim, Martyrs Memorial at Assolna and Patradevi and various other Memorials, Monuments and places related to Goa Revolution movement and Goa Liberation movement were not notified by the government,” Alemao said.
He said the ancient Mahadev Mandir at Chandor was also not in the list.
He further said that there was a need to protect the sanctity of these places and therefore the sites needed to be notified.
“I hope the government will act fast and issue the notification at the earliest and take up the renovation, refurbishment and beautification of all such places in Goa on priority," Alemao said.
